NBA: Detroit coach Van Gundy 'ashamed' of Trump victory

Outspoken Detroit Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy joined a number of other non-political voices on Wednesday in condemning the election of Donald Trump as US President, stating that he was "ashamed" of the outcome.

Several actors, writers and musicians had earlier expressed their disappointment at Republican Trump's successful election, with many having publicly supported Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton beforehand.

How Donald Trump can wage a trade war against China

SHANGHAI: As a candidate, Donald Trump aimed some of his most blistering words at China+ , declaring that "we already have a trade war" and suggesting ominously that "we have the power over China+ , economic power.
"
As president of the United States, Trump can use trade - a cornerstone of his populist rise - as a weapon, with the potential to drastically reshape the world's two largest economies, as well as the companies, industries and workers who depend on their hundreds of billions of dollars in closely linked goods. But neither side may win.

Cutting off trade will not bring back the bulk of US manufacturing jobs lost to China in previous decades as it became the world's factory floor. Already, some industries that left the United States years ago, such as garment making and some light manufacturing, are now leaving China for even cheaper places. An aggressive stance with China+ also risks antagonizing an authoritarian government with its own brand of economic nationalism.

Yet the unsettling reality for Beijing is that Trump has a variety of ways to get back at China+ for trade practices that he, his supporters or people in the affected industries view as unfair. China sells a large array of goods to the United States that he can aim at for higher tariffs.

The opportunities for China to retaliate would be more limited. In the most basic terms, China buys less from the United States.
But China could make some strategic strikes at targets like Boeing, US automakers and American farmers. Beijing exerts tight control over China's airlines, for example, and sometimes steers contracts to Airbus, Boeing's European rival, when officials feel that Washington is uncooperative.

NEW DELHI: Minister for women and child development Maneka Gandhi has written to minister for external affairs Sushma Swaraj to seek revision of visa format so foreign nationals with criminal record of child abuse don't enter India.

On Monday, reacting sharply to the horrific case of a paedophile who claims to have targeted 500 minor girls, Gandhi had reinforced the demand for urgently setting up a national register of sex offenders and sought that ministry of home affairs must create the registry without any further delay. Gandhi cited this case of the paedophile who happens to be a repeat offender to emphasise on the need for a national register urgently.

In 2015, Gandhi had proposed a national register of sex offenders to keep a watch on people convicted of sexual offences, irrespective of their age. A proposal was then sent to MHA. Demonetisation: RBI refuses to exchange old notes; woman goes topless in protest

New Delhi - Unable to get a few junked currency notes exchanged, a frustrated poor woman became topless in front of RBI regional office here today.

The woman, who was with her child, was in tears when turned away by guards after repeated request to exchange her junked notes. In protest, she sat in front of the RBI entrance gate.

When the guards tried to forcefully move her away from the entrance, the woman in disgust took off her clothes and sat topless in front of the iron gate, stunning the onlookers as well as the security personnel.

Later, the RBI guards called the police and she along with her kid was bundled away to police station, thus ending
the surcharged drama at the high profile building which is just a stone's throw away from the Parliament House.

Many others including retired and aged persons who have come to exchange their old notes said the government should not go back on the promise made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his November 8 address to the nation that old notes could be exchanged at the select RBI offices till 31 March.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address to the nation on 8 November 2016 had said, "There may be some who for some reason, are not able to deposit their old 500 or 1,000 rupee notes by 30 December, 2016. They can go to specified offices of the Reserve Bank of India up to March 31, 2017 and deposit the notes after submitting a declaration form."

However, in an ordinance dated 28 December, the government said only those citizens who were abroad during the 50-day period from 10 November to 30 December would be allowed to exchange the demonetised notes at the RBI counters.

Hundreds thronging the RBI office to exchange the old notes have returned empty handed as the central bank is allowing the facility only for NRIs or those who were abroad during the demonetisation period.
