WCD ministry seeks change in visa format to stop entry of foreigners with criminal record of child abuse

NEW DELHI: Minister for women and child development Maneka Gandhi has written to minister for external affairs Sushma Swaraj to seek revision of visa format so foreign nationals with criminal record of child abuse don't enter India.

On her twitter handle on Wednesday, Gandhi posted, " Have requested Sushma Swaraj ji to revise visa format so foreign nationals with criminal record of child abuse don't enter India." "At present, foreign nationals do not have to declare their record of criminal prosecution for visas to travel to India," she further tweeted. her third tweet stated, "Have requested that Indian visa format should include a declaration of criminal record."

On Monday, reacting sharply to the horrific case of a paedophile who claims to have targeted 500 minor girls, Gandhi had reinforced the demand for urgently setting up a national register of sex offenders and sought that ministry of home affairs must create the registry without any further delay. Gandhi cited this case of the paedophile who happens to be a repeat offender to emphasise on the need for a national register urgently.

In 2015, Gandhi had proposed a national register of sex offenders to keep a watch on people convicted of sexual offences, irrespective of their age. A proposal was then sent to MHA. According to the WCD ministry one of the reasons learnt to be delaying the national register of sex offenders has to do with the plan of the MHA to set-up a national register for other crimes as well.
